Scouting at its best!

2010 National Youth Leadership Training

Western Massachusetts Council

Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation
June 26 - July 2, 2010

The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a leadership training program for youth leaders developed by the Boy Scouts of America.  It consists of a seven-day outdoor practical phase and an application phase.  During the practical phase, the Scout is trained in team building and leadership in the outdoor experience, which calls on him to use all of his scouting skills.  During the application phase, the scout applies the skills he learned during the course.  With the assistance of his scoutmaster, he will apply these skills in the practical phase in his home troop.  His Scoutmaster will determine his successful completion. .  NYLT is not another summer camp, but an intense, challenging, leadership experience.  All scouts and their parents must sign a pledge to follow the Scout Oath and Law.  Any Scout that dishonors this pledge will be sent home immediately.  A staff of volunteer Scouts and Scouters from the Western Massachusetts Council conduct the course.

What does NYLT do?
The purpose of NYLT is to support the Scout’s troop program.
         The course will:

  • Give participants the confidence and knowledge to run the troop program.

  • Give participants a “Leadership Toolkit” to aid them in applying their newly acquired skills back in the Troop.

  • Provide an opportunity to experience Scouting at its best.

  • Allow participants to share ideas and experiences with Scouts from other troops.

  • Enhance the relationship between the participant and his Scoutmaster.

  • BE FUN!

Who is eligible to attend?
To be eligible to attend a Scout must:

  • Be a First Class Scout before the course begins.

  • Be at least 13 years of age before the course begins.

  • Currently hold a leadership position in the troop or have the potential and desire to serve in a leadership position.

  • Have the approval of his Scoutmaster to attend the course.

We’ve never sent anyone before… Why should we now?

Sending Scouts to NYLT helps them develop their leadership potential.  This results in a smoother running unit.  If your Troop is committed to having a true Boy led Troop, your youth leaders need the skills presented in this course.

Isn’t the Troop or Scoutmaster training enough?

No. Troop and Scoutmaster training sessions were designed to be shorter and introduce the Youth Leader to his new leadership role.  NYLT builds on and enhances the skills and ideas introduced in the other sessions.  NYLT does not replace the training done by the Scoutmaster, it is to provide additional leadership skills and enhances the Youth Leader’s relationship with his Scoutmaster.

What does a Scout need?
     Participants are required to have:

  • A complete Class A uniform (Scout Pants, Shorts, Scout belt, Scout socks, Scout shirt with all insignia properly sewn on, Scout hat (optional)

  • A thorough knowledge of the Scouting skills required from Tenderfoot to First Class ranks

  • A completed Health and Medical Record

  • Scouts accepted will receive a personal equipment list with their acceptance letter.

Which Scouts do we send?

Send the Scouts who are now in leadership positions or soon will be. They are the ones that can put these leadership skills to work for the benefit of your unit and themselves now.

How much does NYLT cost?
The cost for NYLT is $325.00 for the week or $295.00 if paid in full by May 15th

  • This includes

    • Food

    • Patrol camping equipment

    • Training materials

  • Pictures will be taken and available at additional cost. (approximately $10.00)

  • Many troops provide their participants a full or partial scholarship to attend.  They feel the investment into a Scout’s leadership skills is an investment into improving their troop’s program.

  • Your $25.00 deposit counts toward the fee.

What is the deadline?

  • Space is limited. There are 48 spots available. Space will be reevaluated 30 days prior to the course. If space is available, Scouts placed on the waiting list will be accepted to the conference.
